The Old Head of Kinsale is a national monument and an ancient royal site. It's
history is traceable back to the times before Christ.
This 200 acre promontory jutting
out into the Atlantic Ocean is now the home of one on the most challenging and spectacular
Golf Courses ever created by man. Tom Stewart of Pinehurst, North Carolina, wrote
after his first visit "the Old Head is a magical translation of landscape into
experience; golfing angles will congregate here and legends will be born".
George Kimball writing in the
Boston Sunday Herald described it as "nine of the holes bring the sea and the
cliffs into play, if you can imagine California's Monetary peninsula with castle
ruins".
The Clubhouses' stonework facade
gives the appearance of another century's old site perfectly in keeping with its
surroundings. John O'Connor, harnessed the expertise of an international design
team, headed up by Ireland's legendary amateur golfer and Walker Cup star, Joe Carr. There
is no doubt that O'Connor has succeeded in creating that which is unique in the world golf
course design. Jack Major of Quincey MA, USA described O'Connor's efforts as "the
Old Head is truly everything a golfer could dream of when trying to picture the perfect
golf course".
